CentOS Stream 10, based on Fedora 40, was released in December 2024. It serves as the upstream, rolling-release development branch for the future RHEL 10.

Unlike the discontinued CentOS Linux, which was a rebuild of RHEL, CentOS Stream receives a continuous flow of updates as they are developed for the next RHEL version.

  • Kernel: Upgraded to Linux kernel 6.12 (from 5.14 in Stream 9).
  • Compilers & Languages: Includes newer versions like GCC 14.2.1 and Python 3.12.
  • CPU Requirement: Requires a v3 microarchitecture level for installation.
  • Display: Xorg has been removed in favor of Wayland as the default display server.
  • Applications: Some desktop applications like GIMP and LibreOffice are no longer included by default and are intended to be run via Flatpak.
  • Database: Redis has been replaced by its fork, Valkey.

Support Lifecycle:

  • CentOS Stream 10: Supported for roughly five years, until RHEL 10 enters its maintenance phase.
  • CentOS Stream 9: Supported until May 31, 2027.

While Red Hat does not officially recommend CentOS Stream for production environments, some organizations use it to get earlier access to new features and bug fixes.
