MiQ adds JumpCloud Patch Management to its Toolset, Patching a Zero-Day Exploit across Hundreds of Devices in Two Days

MiQ Digital: Securing 1,250 Devices and Future-Proofing IT with JumpCloud

MiQ Digital is a programmatic media partner that builds bespoke programmatic advertising solutions designed to help marketers and agencies make the smartest decisions for every campaign. They are experts in programmatic trading backed by data science and advanced analytics. Headquartered in the United Kingdom, the company employs over 1,200 people across 15 global offices on four continents.

Challenge: Lacking a Patch Management Solution for a Zero-Day Exploit

In September 2022, when Apple released a patch for a critical zero-day exploit—one that hackers were already using to execute malicious code and gain complete access to devices—the MiQ IT team was immediately put on high alert.

Managing 1,250 devices globally (50% of which are Macs), the team lacked an automated patching mechanism.

“Due to the severity of the exploit, it caught a lot of noise in the industry... At that point, the only option was to ask 1,100 employees to take care of it manually and then keep track of who followed through and who didn’t until the issue was fully resolved.”
— Chaithra U J, Senior Systems Engineer, MiQ Digital

Solution: Extending the Relationship with JumpCloud

MiQ had an existing relationship with JumpCloud, the open directory platform used for centralized device management. In their search for a rapid fix, they discovered JumpCloud also offered a patch management solution.

The MiQ team immediately reached out to Leo Zandi, JumpCloud’s team lead of EMEA expansion, via WhatsApp. Despite being on holiday, Leo responded “within minutes.”

“He said that we didn’t have to worry about any extra costs — which was very generous of JumpCloud. Before we knew it, technical engineers from JumpCloud hopped on a call to provide quick support and do a short demo. Within a day, we were able to launch the tool.”

Outcome: Expanding a Long-Term Partnership

The swift, supportive response during this critical incident led MiQ to renew and significantly expand its commitment, making the company one of the first PlatformPlus customers.

“I know it was a small, two-day incident, but our experience with JumpCloud — the level of engagement and trust that was shown — carried a lot of weight,” Chaithra explained, noting the story was key in the decision to upgrade and reinvest in the platform.

A Smooth User Experience

Thanks to JumpCloud, MiQ easily rolled out the patch globally to Mac users. The process was designed to be user-friendly, minimizing disruption for client-facing employees who needed device availability.

  • Users received a branded pop-up message letting them know about the zero-day patch.
  • Users had the freedom to choose to update immediately or delay the patch until a more convenient time (the next day or following week).
  • The process was smooth, trustworthy, and avoided bombarding users with excessive notifications.

A Future-Proof Patch Management Strategy

MiQ now leverages JumpCloud for ongoing, high-priority patch management, implementing regional groups and policies to future-proof their operations. New devices are automatically added to appropriate groups, applying patch policies instantly upon onboarding.

“We’ve automated patching and simplified compliance. The JumpCloud Open Directory platform gives us centralized control and visibility across all Windows and Mac machines and enables us to achieve patch management success with minimal impact on users.”
— Chaithra U J

With JumpCloud powering more critical processes, the IT team has avoided significant manual effort and receives automatic alerts for any issues, ensuring problems are resolved in a timely manner.

A Collaborative Partnership

The partnership remains highly collaborative. When MiQ requested the advanced scheduling functionality (like forced reboots and deferred updates) available for Windows machines to be applied to Macs, JumpCloud rapidly delivered:

“We submitted a request to JumpCloud; they responded and rolled out the same feature for Macs very quickly,” Chaithra says. This responsiveness gives MiQ confidence that they have found a partner they can continue growing alongside for years to come.
